Obviously I would never use such a thing on a run-and-gun production like "ZOMBIS!!!" (and no, I don't know when I'll come back to it; the non-release disaster of "a first date" has me even less interested in the psychological distress of making it), but in terms of audio quality and my camera's failing audio output jack, I thought an external sound recorder would be a good idea.
The device is a Marantz PMD660, a digital audio recorder that works with the existing mikes except the shotgun mic (since it was built exclusively for the accessory shoe on Canon cameras).
That's right. I'm going for boom mics. Why? Because the sound quality is better and cleaner, so I don't have to deal with inconsistent background noise as much (nor does the audience). And the reason why it failed last time was because
1. Actors didn't memorize their lines properly 2. The boom pole didn't have a proper grip on it since it wasn't intended as a microphone boom, so it captured all the handling noises (get gloves, or use a static mic stand) 3. Dangling mic. I've acquired a clip so the mic isn't just hanging on a wire anymore, it's attached to the pole itself.
Being that this would mean that I can't operate all the equipment by myself anymore, I'll likely give Richie and Kevin a tutorial on operating it, once I learn how to use it myself. Now that I don't have to lug my camera kit everywhere to record ambient sounds...
